LEAKED: German Government Warns Key Entities Not To Use Windows 8 – Links The NSA

According to leaked internal documents from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) that Die Zeit obtained, IT experts figured out that Windows 8, the touch-screen enabled, super-duper, but sales-challenged Microsoft operating system is outright dangerous for data security. It allows Microsoft to control the computer remotely through a built-in backdoor. Keys to that backdoor are […]

Cell phone reception problems? Do this ….

If you’re in an area where you think you should have cellphone service but don’t, put your phone in airplane mode then switch back.  This will cause your phone to re-register and find all of the towers in your vicinity.  This is quicker/takes less energy than rebooting your phone.

Also, when in an area without service, […]

Explain to Me Like I’m Five: How does Google search the internet for something in a matter of seconds?

Google spends all day every day searching the web with bots.  Websites are cataloged in a database and when you search, it’s the database that is being looked through, not the whole Internet.  Lots of sites like internal corporate websites prevent Google from being able to read them for their database […]

FBI Virus NOW attacking Macs (and how to get rid of it!)

Several Mac owners here in Charleston SC have been hit with the FBI virus.  Most owners admitted to surfing sites serving pornography, torrents, game cracks, live streaming of copyrighted movies, etc.

It sounds cliché, but it kind of goes hand in hand with the ransom page (“you’ve been naughty, doing something illegal: now you have to […]

NSA scandal delivers record numbers of internet users to DuckDuckGo

Several of my Charleston computer clients have asked me about privacy in lieu of recent events. Unfortunately, I feel that particular boat has left the dock a while ago.  Some folks are flocking to anonymous search engines like DuckDuckGo.  In fact, they’ve had an increase of over 3 million searches in the last few days.

I […]

Tips for booking Hotels/Flights Online (from seasoned travelers)

1.  Most budget airlines like JetBlue, SouthWest, etc. don’t publish flights or fares; you won’t see their fares listed by 3rd parties like HotWire, Expedia, etc.  Check these airlines direct first.

2.  When looking for a hotel, TripAdvisor is a good resource for reviews. What sets it apart from other sites is that reviewers can submit […]

Google Flights

Choose dates and budget; GF shows you where you can fly for what $$ on a map.  Pick a destination and it will show you lowest fares for 15 days before and after your chosen date (bargraph symbol at the top right hand corner).

Inside a PhotoBooth

Finger Snappin Entertainment (DJs, Photo-Booth Rental, Trolly Service) in Charleston needed repairs to their photo-booths.  After we finished, the owner Burt was happy we eliminated the problems and exceeded expectations by making improvements to picture quality and speed.  Burt reports that his staff that run the booths are much happier.

The screen you see inside a […]

So Long Windows XP – April 8, 2014

Next year one week before income tax is due in the US, Microsoft ENDS support for Windows XP effectively putting older PC’s running XP in “use at your own risk” mode.

Folks can still use XP but it’s over a decade behind newer operating systems leaving it more vulnerable for security holes, viruses, etc.  Also new […]

A closer look at Google Glasses (no pun intended)

Several of my computer repair and computer service clients in Charleston are surgeons; when I showed them Google Glass (Google’s wearable computer platform), one thought the tech was cool but limited to personal or fun things like skydiving or rock climbing, etc.

But when I asked the other (who regularly teaches / advises […]
